Is cannabis supportive of a healthy lifestyle and improved athletic performance? Let’s explore the benefits cannabis can offer both pre- and post-workout.With Los Angeles, cannabis delivered, it’s easy to keep our recommended products stocked up in your gym bag.

Cannabis and Mindset

Stress, depression, and anxiety can impact how we perform, and cannabis can help calm the mind.

Research is underway to determine which combinations of cannabinoids work best for stress, performance anxiety, and mental well-being.

In one study, published in 2019, the authors state, “Evidence points toward a calming effect for CBD in the central nervous system.” Another study suggests that “combined THC and CBD use provided the largest benefits in well-being and calm.”

Nate Jackson consumes cannabis, and he played football for the Denver Broncos from 2003 to 2008. He claims other players consumed it, too.

Jackson spoke out about the NFL’s (formerly) strict cannabis policy in a 2014 article. He said, “In my playing days, the marijuana smokers struck me as sharper, more thoughtful, and more likely to challenge authority than the nonsmokers…It gave us clarity. It kept us sane.”

Based on studies and reports from consumers, cannabis can help improve mindset by alleviating some of the weight of anxiety, stress, and depression, while elevating mood.

This can lead to better sleep. Sleep and cannabis are discussed in greater detail below.

Cannabis and Performance

Cannabis isn’t performance enhancing, but that isn’t the entire story

While cannabis does not directly improve performance, it can help athletes reduce inflammation and pain and improve sleep. All of this helps athletes get more from their workouts.

Researchers have done some studies on the topic, and more are in progress. Cannabis can help athletes, though it is not a direct performance enhancer.

Some research suggests that cannabis could potentially replace the use of addictive opioids for pain. This is great for high-performance athletes like Nate Jackson, who play contact sports and don’t wish to use prescription painkillers for their injuries.

Part of recovery is getting a good night’s rest. Some athletes use cannabis for sleep and insomnia. This study’s findings suggest that cannabis can help improve sleep in multiple areas.

“As assessed by the PSQI, adult Cannabis Users had greater sleep quality, shorter sleep latency, longer sleep duration, fewer sleep disturbances, and a significantly better PSQI Global Sleep Score compared with adult Controls.”

All in all, a well-rested athlete with less pain and inflammation has a good chance of performing better.

4 Products for Your Gym Bag

While much of what we know about cannabis and working out is based on anecdotal evidence there’s enough buzz around it to suggest that it can help. But it’s essential to know your body and your tolerance and preferences.

So what should you bring into your workout routine? May we recommend the following cannabis-infused options:

  1. Indicas such as Ice Cream Cake Live Rosin Badder, which you can dab, are an excellent option for rest and recovery. After a workout, it will help with relaxation and sleep. Just don’t forget, consume it once you arrive home! No dabs at the gym (yet!).
  2. Sativas are helpful for a positive mindset pre-workout. Blue Dream Live Resin, for example, is energizing and uplifting. Be sure to toke or dab a sativa in advance of your workout, and that the peak of your high has worn off before doing any heavy lifting.
  3. For pain and inflammation, choose hybrid and indica strains. Rainbow Kush, an indica, offers pain relief without body heaviness. Use this post-workout. If the pain is too great, consume before you exercise. Be sure the high has dissipated before your workout.
  4. Looking for something to hit right before your session? Look no further than the sativa-dominant STIIZY Pineapple Express vape. It’s tasty, discrete, and easy to get the dose right. Offering a little pep in your step and energetic boost, this is an ideal pre-workout option.
